The cosmetics industry generates sales of over $170 billion a year. Needless to say, companies like Gillette, L’Oreal Paris, Nivea, Neutrogena and Chanel develop countless products every year and spend enormous amounts of capital on marketing.

Test marketing cosmetics like skin care, cleansers, haircare and makeup are extremely important in deciding what needs improvement and what makes it to the shelves.

In a focus group there is generally a small group of participants who are similar in experience. Questions are posed by a lead reviewer and the answers are examined in depth. Products and services are researched through group discussions with the goal of eliciting possible recommendations in hopes for discovering mechanisms of improvement. Focus groups are often fairly active and dynamic, but very rewarding for participants and a lot of fun.
